UK Passenger Car Production Declines Amid Shift to Electric Vehicles
Passenger car production in Britain decreased by 8% year-on-year to 416,000 units in the first half of the year, according to the SMMT union. The decline is attributed to the ongoing transition from combustion-engine cars to electric vehicles. In June alone, production dropped by 27% compared to the previous year, a significant acceleration from May's 12% decline, marking the fourth consecutive month of reduction. This trend aligns with manufacturers adapting their production lines to accommodate electric models, following £23.7 billion of investment in the UK announced last year, including significant commitments from companies like Nissan and Tata Motors. Looking ahead, the SMMT forecasts a 9% drop in the production of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the UK, expecting output to reach 910,000 units for the full year due to these structural factory changes. The chart below shows commercial vehicle production in the United Kingdom from 2017 to the first half of 2024.
Havas Loses B Corp Certification Over Shell Contract
After a thorough investigation, B Lab has revoked the B Corp status of Havas London, Havas Lemz, Havas New York, and Havas Immerse due to their affiliation with Havas Media, which secured a contract with oil giant Shell. This decision follows Havas Media's takeover of Shell’s media business from WPP’s GroupM, valued at $240 million in 2022. B Lab, which certifies companies for their commitment to social and environmental standards, stated that Havas' actions violated the B Corp community’s core values. Despite Havas' sustainability efforts and certifications, including an EcoVadis Gold Medal, B Lab maintained that the affiliation with Shell, a major fossil fuel polluter, disqualified the agencies from maintaining B Corp status. This decision was hailed by climate activists and B Corp-certified agencies but also criticized for its delayed implementation, underscoring the tension between commercial contracts and ethical standards in the advertising industry. The volume of operational and sabotage spills of Shell from 2007 to 2023 is detailed in the chart below.
